KAI NU’U O KANALOA

The brief from Central Pacific Bank was simple, create an art installation for the lobby of their newly renovated HQ located in the arts district of Honolulu that leveraged the brand design work we had been doing for them which was rooted in being radically human.

The installation needed to humanize data to create a tangible and human kinetic art installation. To bring an idea to life we partnered with the genius minds at Espadaysantacruz located in Madrid.

The final idea dubbed Kai uses the power and symbolism of waves to create a kinetic sound sculpture that acts like a live surf report from any chosen buoys around the Hawaiian Islands. Rainsticks act as a vehicle to deliver the sound of waves with real-time data of Hawaiian swells. The wave’s height, period, and direction are mimicked within the installation live every minute of every day to anyone that visits Central Pacific Bank's headquarters.
